It is only with the find yourself so it begins to falter, however the smack-upwards finale rescues it regarding the ‘red’. Ingeniously staged and you will intelligently dialogued, it has no great complications when you look at the life style down its extremely unsightly term.” [ 8 ]
Month-to-month Motion picture Bulletin told you “The movie actions at the a fast speed, the fresh new dialogue are slick and you can characterisations essentially energetic. Cobb), and a scuffling actress (Evelyn Keyes) whose sibling (Nina Foch) worked during the local casino and you will dated good corrupt detective (Jim Bannon). Brand new caustically epigrammatic program, this new cast’s suavely managed body gestures away from like and you can menace, and you may Rossen’s thrillingly restrained and you can fashionably cocky photo (and their political conscience) get this to pugnacious yet detail by detail spectacle an invisible vintage of your style.” [ ten ]

It is primarily an issue of viewing Mr. Powell undergo his paces stylishly if you’re a big shed regarding actors and you may stars promote him vintage service. Evelyn Keyes plays the great nothing lady which brings forth the fresh finest in him and Ellen Received is the easy and slinky vixen which becomes your towards the jams. Thomas Gomez are fatty as villain and you may Lee J. Cobb really does a special able trip given that a weary cops inspector just who ultimately shuts the way it is.
